Hopping Frog Counting Day

Today we played some super fun numeracy games with the tots!

Related to our frog and tadpole theme for the month, we introduced them to the song “5 little speckled frogs” which is a great way of subtracting from five using our fingers. Here is a link to the song if you would like to continue singing it with your munchkin at home, holding up your fingers to represent the frogs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SI1tkmd8tws

We played “Hopping Frog” using our lovely wooden frog and smooth pebbles… We stacked five pebbles on the table and let the frog “hop” over each one, counting as he hops. Like musical chairs, we took a pebble away after each completed line of hopping, observing how the line got shorter and how we had less pebbles to count each time.
A wonderful, fun introduction to subtraction and a great Montessori exercise to physically watch the line of pebbles get shorter, the more pebbles we remove.

The children are getting really good at sequencing the "life cycle of the frog" cards during circle time and comparing the real life tadpoles with the illustrations of tadpoles. What is wonderful is that they are excited about it and are talking about it, learning lots of new vocabulary while they're at it!

The children did their own, free artistic interpretation of our tadpoles and of frogs with paint. I love their different styles!
