Today we did a wonderful activity that explores the different densities of ice, water and baby oil. The children had a fantastic time playing with coloured ice cubes that we put in our sensory bins with water and baby oil. The two don't mix and so the kids were amazed at the different effects that were created by scooping, stirring and moving the ice cubes through the liquids.
As the ice cubes melted, the food colourant would seep into the water, mixing with the colours of the other ice cubes and creating patterns with the baby oil. The children scooped the liquid out with different sized containers, poured them, stirred them and combined them, mixing colours. They observed how adding ice displaced the liquid. An overall fantastic activity to explore volume and how liquids of different densities interact.
